How to Install Custom Themes on Windows 11 & 10 (Complete Guide)

Why Does Windows Restrict Custom Themes?

Windows visual styles manage every graphical asset on your screen: window frames, caption buttons, taskbar textures, File Explorer backgrounds, and context menus. To enforce design consistency and security, Microsoft locks these rendering services behind digital signature verification files (uxtheme.dll, themeui.dll, and uxinit.dll). Third-party themes downloaded from designers on DeviantArt or GitHub lack Microsoft signatures, which is why a patcher is mandatory.

Step 1: Create a System Restore Point

Before making any system-level modifications, safeguarding your installation is essential:

  1. Press Win + S, type Create a restore point, and press Enter.
  2. In the System Properties dialog, select your Windows Drive (usually C:) and ensure Protection is enabled.
  3. Click Create, name it Before UltraUXThemePatcher, and confirm.

Step 2: Download & Apply UltraUXThemePatcher

  1. Download the latest version from the Official UltraUXThemePatcher Download Page.
  2. Right-click the setup executable and select Run as administrator.
  3. Click Next and accept the terms of service.
  4. The patcher will display the detected versions of uxtheme.dll, themeui.dll, and uxinit.dll. Click Patch.
  5. Once completed, restart your computer to reload the patched theme services.

Step 3: Download and Extract Custom Themes

Browse reputable theme hubs such as DeviantArt. Once you find a theme compatible with your Windows build:

  1. Extract the downloaded archive (ZIP or RAR).
  2. Locate the folder containing a .theme file and a subfolder with the same name containing .msstyles.
  3. Copy both the .theme file and its matching folder into: 
    C:\Windows\Resources\Themes

Step 4: Activate Your New Visual Style

  1. Right-click any empty space on your desktop and choose Personalize.
  2. Navigate to Themes.
  3. Scroll down to the Custom Themes section and click on your newly installed visual style to apply it instantly.
